My success story with FAVATTIC

How I developed thanks to favattic for the research professional – and for the one-high shool graduates!

Amassing knowledge is one thing – but structuring the amassed knowledge and retrieving it is another. Many people are particularly hard at work with this task. How can I get all the relevant information, but still not to be bogged down, but to proceed according to plan, to achieve an optimal result in the end – for example in an examination situation?

Two students from Hamburg, 2017 was the most important exam in their young lives, the Baccalaureate. With favattic they prepared for this day – with extraordinary results!

Siblings, even twins, both with the aim of mastering the exam in the best possible way, which suggests that their working method is similar in detail, but far from it. Both Leon and Marvin used favattic from the outset for their preparations and research, but each had a completely different approach and a completely different structure for themselves.

“Gradually, I have built up such a personal system.”

Leon reports: ‘I first picked out a lot of sources and collected them in favattic before I worked through them properly. I have sorted my links in a favattic list by media type and created a separate bookmark folder for each media type, from ‘newspaper article’ to ‘scientific treatise’. Only the many ‘newspaper articles’ bookmarks I have further structured and divided into different subject areas. ‘Gradually, I set up such a personal system.’

“The tab number in the browser has decreased and not multiplied.”

His twin brother Marvin, on the other hand, reports a different approach: “I have already created a detailed bookmark structure in favattic before the research. In order to do this, I have been considering the detailed topics I would like to research, and I have listed thematic over and under terms, after which I have created a corresponding folder and sub-folder structure for my bookmarks. I spent the first two days researching links, skim and then place them in favattic accordingly. When I was working through a subject area, all the articles are opened in the browser, worked them out one after the other and closed them in the same order in which they are opened. The tab number decreased and not multiplied, as was previously the case. So, I had a good overview.”

Links saved with a mouse click

How can we now store links in favattic? Nothing is easier than that, thanks to the extensions of favattic. Marvin explains, “I downloaded favattic´s Chrome extension so it’s integrated into my browser’s add-on bar. Directly accessible! If I find a page that I want to save, I just need to click on the extension button and can easily select the folder and subfolder where I want to save the link. If you want, you can also add tags to the links here. With just a few clicks, I was able to place my links in order, so that I found them quickly even days later!”

Usable anytime, anywhere

“Another advantage of favattic was, among other things, that the whole thing is stored online,” says Leon. “In other words, when I went to the University library to research and did not have my computer, I was able to log in directly and access all my links.” In this way, both were extremely flexible in their research and work processes.  Found a page with interesting information on the way? No problem, Zack saved with the Android smartphone app to deal with it more intensively later. This way, no source was lost and there was no fear of presenting an incomplete bibliography in the end – all the sources used were neatly arranged in favattic. All links at a glance together!

Chaos vs. order

Although this time it was the first longer test, the question arises, of course, how research activities have worked before the use of favattic. The twins are united in the case – it was definitely more chaotic. Marvin reports of extremely long lists in the browser’s default bookmarking – there, of course, without subfolders. “In the past it has happened before, that one forgets to copy a link, or you no longer know which link that was and had to go through everything again.”  Leon admits that at the beginning of a search he did not get such an overview of the information on the subject. “I just started working on it, not looking at the beginning, what information is there actually, and which ones could be useful for me.”  Chaotic with a certain risk of incompleteness, one could therefore summarize the work without favattic. Pretty unsatisfactory then. Leon adds: “Unlike Marvin, I have not used the browser-integrated standard bookmarking method so far, quite seldom maybe times. That was the first time I’ve started making such an online linkLibrary and to use it purposefully. This was a good exercise for the coming study.  The research activity is still increasing there, so I am glad that I have a structure thanks to favattic. “In the end, Leon and Marvin agree that everyone can find their own way to work with favattic. Just as it fits the individual way of working. “favattic will definitely accompany us through our studies!”

High School-Topic by Marvin: “Poor and rich – should the property tax be re-introduced in Germany?”

High School Topic by Leon: “Hong Kong – a city without Space for poverty?”
